Red Bull to Test "Aeroscreen" at Sochi FP1
« on: April 28, 2016, 09:09:20 PM »
RBR will test it's driver safety structure this week-end at Sochi. Daniel Ricciardo will run installation laps with the "Aeroscreen" attached during FP1.

"I'm sure I will get a lot of TV time in the first two minutes of the session!," said Danny Ric.

This isn't the first attempt to put a canopy on an F1 car. Here is Sterling Moss in a Vanwall VW5 at Monza in 1958 & Jack Brabham in his Brabham BT24 at Monza in 1967.

I fully understand and support driver safety; however, that is just about 'butt ugly'

With this design it still seems like the top of the helmet is exposed...you know, the bit with the brain in it...I like the Ferrari version more, and a windscreen in rain would be horrible.

It seems like it would soon be covered with shredded pieces of tire (marbles, clag, tire boogers, whatever), too.

Maybe that is why there is a slot for Brabham to look through in the photo above. Also, why is it called an "Aeroscreen", shouldn't it be called a Debris Screen?

They need to make a decision by July.  As usual, the FIA are pushing a timeline that won't allow for reasonable testing.  They should have multiple race length tests in various conditions before a decision is made.  Dedicate a couple of extra cars using reserve drivers to run full time in all practice sessions over the next 10 race weekends or so.  In fact offer it to every team that as long as they have one of the two variations attached to a spare car and run 80% of every practice session, then they can test whatever other bits that they want (3 birds with one stone - give the teams the extra testing they have begged for, seat time for reserve drivers, and a realistic way to evaluate the two different variations)

That is some good thinking Scott.

I know there would be plenty of takers for the seats to drive them.

After about half the race they will never see through the thing,  massive tear off strips aren't going to be usable.  So lots of pit stops to keep it clear.
