FIA Picks Halo Over Aeroscreen
« on: May 28, 2016, 06:27:41 PM »
Racer is reporting that the FIA is about to announce its choice of the Ferrari halo device for the 2017 season. The reason given is that the Red Bull designed aeroscreen hasn't been thoroughly tested.

Yeah, I heard them talking about that on the Q show.  They said to implement the windscreen version at this point in the 2017 cars development would be chaos with the aero.  They will start with the halo and likely move to the windscreen the following year or 2019.

I suppose the next thing will be airbags.  :DD
An aircraft landing is just a controlled crash.

By 2025 the cars will be radio controlled.

Isn't Formula E experimenting with robotic cars?  No radio control required.

They tested those back in the late 1990s. The only reason we didn't get them 15 years ago was because HANS proved more effective than airbags, with far fewer downsides in the single-seater context. Adding airbags would be like having two beer mats for one glass of beer.

Not sure I believe that device would have been much protection for Bianchi. And it's ugly.

The idea is to protect against Wilson- and Massa-style accidents (where there was a distinct mass that could be deflected sensibly and safely) rather than a Bianchi-style accident (where the mass... ...can't, turning the problem into an energy-diversion exercise). So the designers would be pleasantly surprised if it provided any assistance in the latter type of accident.

I doubt the halo would have helped in the Massa incident, extreme good luck for a bolt to hit the halo,  can't stand the look of them and as you say they will not deflect a JCB, I really do not think they will do any good and will cause a problem at some point following a crash.
