Remember The Fallen of World War II

On June 6th 1944, 72 years ago, thousands and thousands of Allied soldiers stormed the beaches at Normandy, France in what was known as D-Day. It was the start of the offensive to drive the Nazis from power and Europe. It would take another year and hundreds of thousands of deaths to make this happen.

Staggering numbers from some countries we overlook when thinking of the real human cost of WW II.
Kind of enlightens on some of the nationalist stances over neighbours, or rivals, intentions.

Thank you for that, Wizzo. It does a fine job of showing just how costly that war was.

We only had a handful of World War II vets at our local Memorial Day remembrance last week. We are loosing them quickly.

As they say, these things echo throughout history.

In Canada, the province of Newfoundland and Labrador is common for being the butt of jokes.  The fact is, in WW1, at the battle of the Somme, the entire regiment from Newfoundland (then a semi independant country) was wiped out.  They basically lost an entire generation of men.

The effects of losing their bravest, brightest and strongest men is still felt today.

Imagine Russia, Poland or Yugoslavia having those millions of men contributing to the world instead of being wasted.

Like Dare, I probably heard the numbers somewhere, but never had a concept of the massive proportion of lost Russians. 

This should be a required part of any history course around the world.
