Nasr's Success at Brazil Might Cost Him His Job
« on: November 17, 2016, 02:23:49 PM »
Brazilian Felipe Nasr scored Sauber's first points of the season at his home Grand Prix. Those points moved Sauber into tenth place in the Constructor's Championship. That means $15 million for Sauber. As a reward, Nasr may loose his ride at Sauber for 2017.

How can that be? We must enter the maze of F1 finances to find out.

First, Sauber's gain is Manor's loss. Sauber's points move Manor to P11, out of the money. That means the team needs to find new revenue streams. (That's F1 speak for pay drivers.)

Second, Esteban Gutierrez has been replaces at Haas. That puts he and is sponsor money in play. Either Gutierrez or Manor development driver Jordan King would probably bring more money with them than what the team is getting from Pascal Wehrlein. That would put the fine young German driver on the market with a still sizable box full of Mercedes money. Given about the same amount of money, who would you take? Wehrlein or Nasr?

With Massa retiring, that doesn't leave many Brazilians in the sport.  Surely that's something Nasr can use to help get a seat with an F1 team

I'm not sure Gutierrez has as much money as Nasr, who brings in a fair bit of money (though I acknowledge it's considerably less than King does). I could see a demotion to Manor, but not complete removal from F1.

Banco do Brasil has said adeus to Nasr. I'd say that pretty well puts him out of it for next season.

I would rate Nasr as a better driver than Gutiérrez.  It would be very disappointing for him if he were displaced, given that he has shown some very good pace in the wet races this year, which shows he has a fair amount of skill and he achieved a number of good results last year when Sauber had a better car.

In that case, please ignore my previous post on this thread :D
