Red Bull Threatens to Pull Out of F1 (Yet Again)
« on: May 18, 2017, 03:39:48 PM »
Red Bull is once more threatening to leave F1. This time it's over engine regs.

Helmut Marko says,  "The idea is very simple. We want an engine that is 1,000 hp, with a single standard KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) and battery, and development does not cost more than $15 million to $20 million.

"They should have sound and allow the driver to make the difference. And independent companies like Ilmor and Cosworth should be able to enter so that we or McLaren can use them if we want."

It seems he's upset that Mercedes wouldn't sell them engines (After they spent an entire season trash talking Renault, who had just powered them to 3 consecutive championships.)

R/B was expecting to be competitive in Spain and were still 75 seconds back at the finish. Since "everybody" knows they have the best chassis, it must be the engine. Personally I think they missed on the chassis a bit this year. Sainz was complaining that the Sauber's year old Ferrari had more power. REALLY?

what sets F1 apart from other racing series is that it really is a team sport.  From the driver to the pit crew, mechanics, engineers, strategy directors, all of them can make the difference between winning and losing.

I don't like that they're making the cars more and more standard.  same components in many places.  Limited components in other places.  Single tire provider, only 4 'power units' per season.  I understand the needs for cost cutting in F1, but eventually the sport will take it one cut too far, and I'll lose interest.  I won't be alone.

Fernando Alonso is ready to walk away from the sport.  Did he go to McLaren so he could drive a car like any other, or did he go to McLaren because they were promising to take chances, to build a car that was different?  McLaren got it wrong, and it's difficult to change with the current rules.  Locking it down further like RBR wants is hardly going to appeal to top drivers.

I wonder if Newey will try grafting a T-Wing on the car?

Liberty's first crisis.  Wonder how Chase will deal with it.  Should be telling of his management style.  Divide and conquer like Bernie or diplomacy and placation?

How about ignore them and quietly look for new owners?
