Driving Games Old & New
« on: August 25, 2017, 12:50:00 PM »
With the immanent launch of Gran Turismo Sport I thought it would be fun to see just how far computer driving simulations have come over the years.

Who remembers Chequered Flag on the ZX Spectrum?

and the latest from GT Sport. Just look at these lighting effects. Things certainly have moved on.

I suppose it's only on PS4 Wiz.  >:(

Forza 7 is the way to go.  GT Sport was fun, but Forza 7 has a massive variety of cars (okay, some are annoying like buggies) but there are very fun cars.  Also it was good that they have introduced more F1 cars from the past, as well as last year's Renault.

I was an Atari guy back in the day (2600 VCS, 800XL, 130XE, 520ST etc).

Fond memories of endless nights playing Pole Position (this version on 800XL .. and more basic Cartridge on the 2600).  Walking 3 miles in the cold, wind and rain to hire from the local computer centre at £1 a night - Great Days!!

All the best,
Cal :)

My first driving game (3 years before I learned it was based on a real-life activity) was Grand Prix by Accolade. It had 3 teams - Williams, McLaren or Ferrari. I always used to be confused because Ferrari had one gear less than the other options. Of course, you had to hit your opponent 30 times (in a 3-lap race...) before your own car broke.

My favourite racing game remains, however, Grand Prix 3 - especially with the better replay function on the 2000 expansion.

My first real memory of a racing game proper was Virtua Racing on the Megadrive, which was not as good as the Saturn version.  Looking back, I have no idea how I did not permanently have headaches!

.. took me a while to figure out that the black squiggly thing was an aerial road map.   I initially thought it looked like a disorganised ramblers' rucksack!!!!  (or at least the straps to hold it together) :DD

This hi-tech wonder was my first race game. Grand Prix, on my original Atari:

Activision .. the KING of their day!!! (like a 5 star hotel, only a label on a games cartridge!).

Now, does anyone remember Rally Speedway on the Atari? ... it was actually one of my earliest "coding" efforts, as I used a Disk Editor (Atari 1050 drive) and fumbled my way around - eventually figuring out how to remove some of the track obstacles, then later, change the layout of the track to some degree!!

All the best,
Cal :)
