1989 Audi 90 IMSA GTO

One of my all time favorite drivers, Hans Stuck talks about the Audi GTO effort. Stuck always seemed to be having a ton of fun driving race cars when other drivers were darkly serious. Audi had less power, a turboed I5 giving 720 BHP, but all wheel drive gave it better brakes and made it easier on it's tires.

Good stuff, Lonnie! Thanks!  :good:

It was a grand race car at a wonderful era of racing. I'm also glad to see that Herr Stuck is still enjoy it all so much.

BTW, the very last scene in the vid, the I-Racing clip with all of the Honda signs, is going into Madness (Turns 7 & 8) at Mid Ohio Sports Car Course. It really does look exactly like what a driver sees at that point - if that driver doesn't end up stuck in China Beach off to the left, that is.

I enjoyed Hans et al in the CSLs even more. :)
I don't remember the specs but 720 from the 5 sounds a tad optimistic, no? Even BMW's 320i handgrenades development peaked at 600ish.
How did the 4wd give it better brakes? I don't understand how drive to the 4 wheels improved braking.
Thanks. :)

Don't know, but that's what he said.

The only thing I can think of is that down shifting/engine braking would apply on all 4 wheels.

I think it's that the all wheel drive made it easier on it's tires, so they were fresher late in the run.

The only thing I can think of is that down shifting/engine braking would apply on all 4 wheels.
'Never drove 4wd but the downshifting was more for being in the correct gear for the speed rather than "engine braking" as it would have been better to throw it in neutral to save on the drivetrain. However, idling for that long at the time could have lead to plugs loading up so the blips helped in avoiding such.   ;)
On rethink, however, even with the box in neutral, the 4 wheels being connected would help prevent lock-up at either end or corner during braking....  :good:
