Toro Rosso Changes Drivers - Again

  • Daniil Kvyat's return to Scuderia Toro Rosso was a one race only thing. The team says that Pierre Gasly and Brendon Hartley will drive for them at Mexico City this week-end. Oddly,  in the STR website's announcement of the line up, Kvyat's picture is bigger than Gasly's and Hartley's pictures put together.

  • Typical. Toro Rosso and parent team Red Bull have had the most unstable driver line-ups in F1 for years. Kyvat has been the odd man out twice now.

  • Well, the point of STR is to create a place to develop drivers for RBR. It's a weird way to run a team, but RBR/STR have been doing their own thing for years, and it certainly provided 4 championships.

  • Me too.  I want to see Hartley have another go.  Kvyatt has had a long time to prove himself, and it's time to make room for another.  STR has always been the Jr or training team for RBR, so I'm ok if it's got a revolving door.  Points at STR are just a bonus.

  • Hartley and Gasly have both been retained for 2018 by STR.  I think that is good news.  I prefer STR to use new talent rather than hand-me-downs from other teams like some others in the midfield.  It's how they found Vettel after all.

  • The main problem for TR next year will be the Honda
engine. Will the owners put the blame of bad performances
on the new drivers? Look what happened to Perez at Mclaren.

  • The Honda engine is getting better.  I think they'll have it up to speed, more worried about the components that keep breaking giving them the grid penalties.

I agree with that Scott and as Honda have the closed season to progress further it'll be interesting if Toro Rosso are quicker than McLaren which would not surprise me. I also believe that if the Honda gets up to speed next year RB will be interested as their contract with Renault expires I believe for 2019.

I kind of feel that Honda is going from the frying pan into the fire in terms of complaining.  Red Bull hasn't shut up about how bad Renault is, and they won 4 championships with them.  STR follows suit about bad mouthing their supplier.  McLaren was always relatively diplomatic about their engine problems, though never denied the reality that the Hondas stunk and that Alonso hated them.

I suppose I'm happy that Honda is showing a genuine dedication to the sport.  I don't know that we've ever had anyone stick around the sport through so much bad press (not counting Bernie)

  • The way RBR has behaved to Renault who took them to those 4 championships is outrageous.  I hope Honda ensures they have comment approval for their contract so Max and Horner won't have permission to badmouth the engine in the press whenever they feel like it.
