Test Drive of Ralph Nader's Own Corvair
« on: November 21, 2017, 08:48:48 PM »
Hyper egotist lawyer and general world class jerk Ralph Nader made his name with a book trashing the Chevy Corvair. I've always thought of it as one of the best cars that GM ever built.

The Hagerty Classic Car Insurance folk road test a 1961 four door that was once owned by the famed village planet idiot. They liked it....a lot!

Egads man. Really?  :o

I've nothing against it, almost bought a '65 in '72, but are you sure you don't mean the Chevette or Vega???  >:D (Yes, I'm exaggerating :))

Fun to drive but certainly not one of GM's best.  ;)

All swing axle cars have the same problem; at extremes the outside rear axle will tuck under the car unless something restrains it. This is exacerbated in the Corvair, Porsche, and Beetle because the engine is behind the rear axle giving it extra momentum which can roll the car. It was less of a problem for VW because of it's low power. We fixed (?) it on my friends Spitfire by installing a "camber compensator", essentially a mono leaf spring, between the uprights and under the rear axles. Didn't help the ride much!
