Veyron crashed at 248 mph in testing!
« on: January 18, 2018, 08:44:18 PM »
Bugatti test driver Loris Bicocchi crashed a Veyron in preproduction testing at Nardo. He was running flat out when the right front tire blew causing a cascade of failures. Nardo actually billed him for 1.8 km of damaged guardrail!

I'm supposing this is just a standard practice for legal purposes, not an attempt to add insult to injury.

However, I'm surprised that circuit damage isn't part of the pre arranged conditions for testing.  With the amount of energy involved in testing a super car, and the fact that guard rails are designed to be destroyed, surely every single lap carries the risk  of a catastrophic use of the safety features.  Insurance should be in place to cover such things, shouldn't it?

Or perhaps the crash exceeded the normal insurable amount and he was billed the difference?

Don't know the ins and outs of insurance, but Bugatti eventually paid the bill.

I would think Bugatti would self-insure against circuit damage.  Considering they just wrote off a new Veyron (Chiron?), I bet the bill for the guardrail was fairly minimal.
