New looks in F1
« on: March 25, 2018, 04:59:45 PM »
Seeing the halo on track brings up a couple of things
  • It's hard to identify the drivers at a glance
  • The car camera feels like it's filled up with the halo.  I can tell that it's obscuring the car (i.e., we're seeing as much action as before), but it feels like a halo cam
  • Looks like the drivers can climb out okay.  I assumed they'd tested it, but it's nice to see.
  • The pit garage monitors the drivers use had to be completely redesigned to be low and wide

The broadcast graphics have been tweaked.  I assume they're handled by FOM like in the past, or are they made by Sky?  Does anyone know?  They're a lot more colourful than before, but I don't think they're providing much different information.  I do like that we actually get to see the team logos instead of just the colours.

Re the monitors, I noticed RBR is one of the only teams using just one screen, which has two benefits, obviously the driver can see whatís going on around him and even look an engineer in the eye in a discussion, and of course, we can actually see the driver as they sit in the car, which canít be said of the 2-screen teams.

I think the drivers climb in and out even easier - they seem to have more leverage than before.  But the question is how easy it will be for a driver to climb out when the car is on itsí lid.

The graphics are FOM, and even hint of the logo.  Whatís very different is the DRS separation graphic they show when a car is approaching or inside the DRS 1sec rule.  I find that really good.  All in all, I find the graphics a leap forward.   :good: :good:

I found it hard to tell drivers apart due to the Halo.  I appreciate what it is designed for but still hope for a more elegant solution.  I read on Autosport about maybe painting the Halo to match the driver's helmet and I think that makes sense in the short term, it'll help fans and really F1 should be about us.

The new graphics are good, clear and engaging but I dislike the new font immensely.  Not clear at all and the font size is considerably smaller, to the extent that even though we got a bigger TV since last season, the writing is smaller and harder to make out.

In the same way as F1 Pundits, we would talk about the Halo all day long ... and most of the observations/assessments are not good!!!

From outside the car, it looks pretty ugly from most angles, especially (in my opinion) looking at the car side on.  I know most teams have done their best to "Tame the Halo" with design features and paint jobs, but the worst of the worst perspective, is the driver's view ... or to be more accurate, the view just above the driver.

In past years, the sport worked hard to give us a "feel of speed and experience" from camera angles as low as possible, where now with the Halo in place, they are higher again and less of a thrill (from the perspective of a driver's hands on the wheel, nose and front wheels).

Who knows where they go from here, but we repetitively hear "The Halo is hear to Stay!" ... so I feel that everyone has been well schooled to continue echoing those sentiments, until such times as the Halo is re-visited or drastically re-designed.  Only time will tell.

All the best,
Cal :)

Ferrari did the best job at making the halo less
obvious. Scott said it in chat and I agree with him :good:

...Indeed, while some other teams had such a colour blending separation, that the Halo looked as welcome as a Poodle Poo on a Bride's Wedding Dress!!!!

Not really phased by the Halo, as how can you detract from already rubbish designs. F1 needs to get back to proper cars, limited or no wings and other crap plus have more mechanical grip.

Worst part of the new graphics - the pics they've used of the drivers. Makes them all look like ex-cons!

GOSH!!!! I thought EXACTLY the same thing ... looked really tacky IMO.  It was similar to a boxing promotion, only WORSE!!! ... did I even detect an animated Roman G pointing to the camera??? ... OH NO!!! ... while most other drivers sported a pathetic side shot pose or "safe" folded arms (Bottas etc).

I understand they need "gloss" for newcomers or existing armchair fans, but I feel that they are watering down everything F1 stands for and I worry about the future for the sport.

All the best,
Cal :)

Totally agree Cal......it's a slippery slope when they start losing the very essence of the sport we love. Yes, they need to embrace the digital age/social media etc etc but not at the expense of the bones of the sport.

The new F1 of later years remind me of the movie
Excalibur when Arthur broke what couldn't be broken.
If people stop F1 I wouldn't be the least surprised.

I'm a bit more sanguine about the look of this year's cars with the halo. Maybe its just my big screen TV but I don't find it more difficult to identify the driver - there's only 2 cars each team so it's a 50/50 guess when not sure. :D

I'm more concerned about the inability of cars to live in the wake from the car in front. No amount of power equalization is going to solve that and there is no plan to tackle either problem.

I couldn't see the "ex-con" pictures because for some reason there's been a miniaturisation craze of pretty much everything. Half the time, I couldn't read the information that was being posted.

The Halo looks horrendous to me, no matter what aesthetic attempts are made on it, it looks like a weapon aimed that the drivers. If a fist is aimed at my face, then putting it in a pretty glove won't make me have a better opinion of it.

Totally agree about the halo Ali, get rid of it. Then get rid of all the excessive aero so we can then see some overtaking.

The difficulty everyone had in this first 2018 race when they got close to the car ahead was plain to see. I fear that more and more we'll be hearing the phrase...."it's difficult to overtake on this (every) track"
"I'm not a pessimist, I'm an optimist with experience"
