Lousy cooling system at root of Williams F1 nosedive?

Paddy's new Merc style cooling system too complicated for Grove engineers - or has Mr Lowe lost his place on the page of tech spec he remembered from Brackley?  ;)

Probably just working out that customers don't get the exact same specs as the factory team   :P

My understanding is that Mercedes themselves are having problems with cooling.

Sounds like a weak excuse to me (even if there are conclusive issues in this area).  My gut feeling tells me that Williams are suffering from numerous issues on the car and they won't be fixed anytime soon.  I guess their goal in 2018, is not to finish on the bottom of the constructor's table - sad times at Grove.

All the best,
Cal :)

Building an F1 car is a bit of a gamble, you have so many systems and parts being designed by so many people, if one of them behaves just a little differently than expected, the whole thing collapses.  The bodywork may work beautifully in the windtunnel, but if it cooks your engine, you can't just add a vent, you have to go back to the beginning and start over.

We've seen radical designs pay off, and we've seen conservative designs fail.  When you've got one chance to get it right it's hard.

To be fair, whilst I agree there are a lot more faults to the car than just the cooling, it is true that the team have had to really open up the back at least once in order to get hot air out the car, so maybe there is something to it.  Probably not the 0.8s that I've seen mentioned, but a fair amount.

Whatever the core of the problem(s) turn out to be, I sincerely hope that they discover something, in order to make progress this season.   Realistically, they must now be targeting competitiveness "mid field" as a best possible result amid their current headaches with the car.

Clearly, it's going to be a long tough journey ahead (parallels to McLaren's pain over the last 2-3 years), but it would be really nice to see Williams battle at the front again, seems so long ago now!!

All the best,
Cal :)

Does anyone remember this result for Williams ...

Can anyone tell me the race venue and which year this was? (I already know by the way, so let's call this a 'mini quiz')

All the best,
Cal :)

What a happy day that was, followed by the oddness of the garage fire.
