Milestone F1 Cars
« on: April 25, 2018, 07:47:15 PM »
Classic Motorsports mag put this list together. My all-time favorite is the Lotus 49 Ford/Cosworth.

Gotta agree Cos, Lotus 49 for me too.  :good:

Don't know how they left out the Lotus 25. I'd say the first monocoque F1 was a milestone.

79 for me...I'd have loved to have seen Clark in it

Lotus had a lot of firsts. 25, 49, 72, 78, 79 all ground breakers in some way.

Like the article but it seems more notable for the omissions.

Where's the Williams FW15 with its trick suspension, the Turbo powered Renault or the Ferrari with the John Bernard semi auto gearbox. To name just a few.

I guess it's like all F1 lists of greatness it's just an opinion, however objective it appears.

It's hard for a modern F1 car to be innovative... every inch of the car is covered by rules, subsections, measurements and tests.

No one is going to show up with 6 wheels or a turbine engine, or an anti-matter air deflector.  The only real change I can see is if someone masters carbon nano tubes.

Hiding my obvious bias, got to agree with John S, the Williams should be on there because it was pretty much the peak for technology on a racing car that led to so many elements being outlawed.  All these lists though are subjective and there are some lovely cars on it.  The Lotus 49 obviously being a great car.

I remember seeing a race, maybe a South African GP where the broadcast kept switching from the Williams in car to a McLaren without active suspension. The camera in the Macca was vibrating so badly you could barely make out what it was showing while the Williams was smooth and crystal clear. Remarkable.
