As usual, the FIA consulted everybody except the acknowledged experts in the field, The Snell Foundation. Most every race I ever drove in over here required a helmet that was Snell rated. I still look for a Snell sticker on my motorcycle helmets.

I've not raced as much as Cossie but ditto, when I needed a helmet it was always a requirement to have the correct Snell label.

The design may offer unprecedented protection but it looks like it will restrict visibility so it has two functions - it will cause more accidents but will offer better protection during the accidents!

Exactly Monty!!! .... if you think back 10-20 years ago (or more), drivers sat a little higher in the cars, they had far better visibility from the helmet and they had NO HALO!!!! .... if this is the general 'structured' design they are going for, surely F1 drivers will require much more concentration and focus than ever before???

If these approaches to safety are pushed too far, you wonder if they would have been better sticking the drivers inside a clear cockpit in the first place!!

Cal :)

Snell's site indicates that it does work with the FIA on helmet standards. I believe it is their policy not to be mentioned as aiding in research where manufacturer assistance has also been mentioned, and we all know the FIA loves to brag about manufacturer assistance. Pretty sure Snell still helped, behind the scenes, to make the new rules as good as possible.

If anyone wishes to do a comparison:

Here is the lastest Snell standard set (you want EA2016 for the latest one)

Here is the latest FIA standard set (you want FIA Standard 8860-2018 - Advanced Helmets)
