Well STR would say he's under contract, and he probably is, however it looks like he's decided to take the McLaren role so some money will need to change hands.

Hard to keep anyone who has decided they are leaving, the worst they can do is prevent him working for a few months or a year.

Will be a blow to STR but I guess James sees no chance of being given the main RBR gig with Newey around and he would be expected to play 2nd fiddle sharing his integration of the Honda lump into an F1 chassis with Milton Keynes.
Mind you James had moved every few years in the past.

It is a good move to get Key, he seems a great guy.  I am wondering if STR want to get Lando Norris as some part of the deal.

I'm sure Marko wants Lando, but does Lando want to go full contract with Red Bull? I've heard he holds paperwork on a guaranteed F1 seat next year, if he wins the F2 crown, courtesy McLaren.

Whether this means a McLaren seat or another team paid for by Macca is unclear, mind you he's got to win F2 which is looking less likely thanks to George Russell the Merc junior hotshot.

Can't see McLaren offering such generous support unless they want him for themselves in 1 or 2 years.
