McLaren Thinks Alonso Might Return

McLaren Racing head honcho Zak Brown thinks that Alonso might return to F1:

“Fernando is an unbelievable talent. It will be a shame not to see him in F1 in 2019, but I would not rule out the future. You know what Fernando is like — he definitely is not done racing."

I hope he does. My guess would be that it will depend on how much McLaren can improve & how successful he is in IndyCar.

Two scenarios I see Alonso returning for:

* A spot opens up with a reigning WCC team.  I think he'd go for that sort of guaranteed win.  Although from what I've read, none of the current 'big three' are interested in Alonso.  So basically if Renault can turn things around, maybe we'll see him along side Ricciardo
* Someone convinces him to get into team ownership.  If Kimi has a stake in Sauber, that might entice other top/rich drivers to follow suit.  I can't imagine Williams is for sale, but Red Bull often makes noise about putting STR up for sale.  It still is the old Minardi outfit where he got his start.

If Alonso does return to F1 in 2020, I don't think it will be an "obvious move" ... certainly not the typical scenarios which some people are already whispering!!

Who knows, if Seb can't handle the talent of Leclerc as his new teammate, maybe he will retire and Alonso will jump back into the Red Car???

Best Regards,
Cal :)

I recall that Mika said something like that when he left. We're still waiting.

McLaren has a history of driver sabbaticals fading into retirement.

Button actually did come back.  Decided he was done with F1 though.
