Giovinazzi confirmed for Sauber
« on: September 25, 2018, 01:24:32 PM »
It's been confirmed today that Antonio Giovinazzi will race next to Kimi Raikkonen at Sauber next year.

https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/138945/sauber-signs-giovinazzi-for-2019-f1-season

Great news for him and a potentially very exciting line-up for Sauber.

Ericsson will stay on as third driver and 'brand ambassador'.  Which is great, as it means he is not free to join Williams.

If you have an iron clad contract that keeps you as a reserve driver for Sauber instead of taking a race seat elsewhere on the grid... time to get a new agent.

Please don't go killing my mood  :tease:

Don't forget that Ericsson's backers are still heavily involved in Sauber, so perhaps it is more a case of that than him having a bad agent.

Yeah I think you're right Luke this sounds like Ericson paying Longbow finance back for keeping the team going with him in the car a couple of years back.

Longer term I reckon Longbow will be looking to offload their holding in the team, that's probably where the rumour of Kimi eventually taking on team owner responsibilities comes in.
Don't suppose Kimi will put up all the money but he'll probably have more luck getting investors with his name over the door than the present ones.

Apologies, I missed your point  :fool:

I've always been a fan of drivers ahead of teams.  I started watching the sport specifically because of Jacques Villeneuve.  If I had to pick a favourite team, my soft spot is for Williams.  It is a shame they've had very little going for them for a very long time now.  Each team has their own great stories ingrained in their history, and I do love that each team is a unique entity.  Most leagues operate as  collection of identical organisations that happen to be in opposition.  F1 teams have their own character and approach.  There is no one way to win at the sport, there is no one way to survive in the sport.  Even though Frank historically saw the driver as his least favourite part of the car, I think their main problem is they haven't had a driver to build the team around.  I think that's how Williams is built, and without that key piece, I don't see how they'll get ahead.  I'm not saying they need the 'best' driver, but they need a driver that is in sync with the team.  The drivers they've had for the last 10 years seem to be at odds with the team.  (Just in terms of working as smooth team.. not suggesting personality conflicts, or that anyone isn't doing their best)  It's entirely possible for a cast off from one team to be the missing link in another.

It will be very interesting to see how Giovinazzi shapes up against Raikkonen.  If he is usually faster, Ferrari may well finally have an Italian driver to slot into their team when Vettel leaves.  If he is not, I have a feeling that he may not get another chance after this year.
