Kubica Not Offended by Vettel
« on: December 21, 2018, 04:37:01 PM »
Another reason why I've always liked Robert.

Robert Kubica isn't offended by Vettel's comments about Williams picking the veteran driver over several younger options.

"Everyone has their own opinion," he told Polish radio RMF FM. "Not everyone has to be happy that I am coming back. Certainly when it comes to other drivers, it's normal that the competition is big.

"You also can't really say that Vettel is a lot younger than me. On the other hand, there are a lot of young drivers who are entering Formula 1 -- my teammate (George Russell) for example."

Interesting fact - Vettel's first F1 start was for BMW-Sauber substituting for Kubica. Robert has a massive shunt at Montreal in 2007 & the FIA wouldn't let him race the following week at Indy. They were concerned about a possible concussion.

I'm sure Vettel is only 3 years younger than Robert so he's got a flippin cheek bringing age into it.  :nono:

Perhaps if Kubica had stayed in F1 Seb may not have as many WDCs as he does, - but as Murray is fond of saying F1 is IF backwards so who knows????   :D

How many other drivers have entered or returned to F1 at his age and with so many years not being an active F1 driver?  None.  How many had returned with debilitation from a life threatening accident?  None.

I would assume that Vettel’s comments were taken out of context and the question he answered was more complex than it appears.

It's certainly true that we have to take the quotes from F1 journalists with the proverbial 'pinch of salt'.

All the same, an F1 driver's job is to create attention for the team sponsors.  The best way to do that is to win races, but I think we can all agree that it doesn't matter who Williams hires, they're not going to win.  So the next category for creating attention is being a driver from a country without other drivers.  Poland is a large country with very little F1 presence, so if not Kubica, who else would it be?  Even if there is another Polish driver with the skills of Kubica (which, it's a big country, surely there's a few talented drivers), who has the story that Kubica has to tell?  Williams (and their sponsors) are going to be the darlings of F1 coverage  as the season begins. And if Kubica does have success?  He'll be the F1 story of the century.  And if he underwhelms?  Then there's room for a younger driver to take his place.

In my opinion, Kubica would not get the Williams drive, had they been competitive during 2018.  As much as I like the guy, he simply got the nod as a "Stop Gap" until Williams bring the car up from the back of the field, which may take as long as 2021 or longer!!! ... then, they will be chasing the young talent attempting to join the grid, while securing sponsorship and bags of cash supporting the driver by that point.

Season's Best,
Cal :)
