I have a small tear in my eye!!!

Many fond memories of watching the Tornado at air shows.   Of course, it became a crowd favourite after the Phantom era ... and not forgetting The Kings of the Skies, The Red Arrows.

Thank you for all your service and pleasure given to aircraft enthusiasts Tornado, you will be missed!!!!

Best Regards,
Cal :)

I used to seriously love the Panavia Tornado, it just about beat the Harrier Jump Jet because of the sheer speed of it and that wonderful swing wing.  I remember waiting at Leuchars train station coming back from a family visit in Scotland and hearing, before seeing a couple of Tornados fly over.  The noise was amazing.

I am fairly lucky where I live now as a fan of this sort of thing.  I regularly see Typhoons and F15-Eagles fly over due to the number of airbases in East Anglia, got some 'fairly' good photos of them.  We also get Atlas and Hercules flying over which is impressive along with the odd Chinook and one Apache!

A German squadron used to train at DMAFB here in Tucson in the winter. The complaints about noise always jumped because the Tornadoes were so much louder than the A-10s and F-16s we're used to.

Where I used to live was the flight path for the Trooping of the Colour so it was pretty cool to watch/hear  :D

F1 fans with a keen interest in aircraft .... who knew?  :good:

Thanks for the "Leuchars" mention Luke, I may drift into singing memories again, but sure Alonsofan fan will stop proceedings, before it gets painful (two notes in).  I was around 11 years old on ny first visit to the airshow in Leuchars.  I remember family & friends all sharing ice cream, as the Red Arrows blasted overhead (before the "restrictions" era).  From then, I had a fondness for the Reds, Phantoms, Tornados, Hornets, Buccaneer, Harrier, Lancaster with Spit/Hurricane by it's side and how could I leave out "The Moth" ... the one and only Vulcan Bomber ....MAN!!! That used to rip the sky up and spit it out!!!!!

Best Regards,
Cal :)

You saw a flying Vulcan Bomber?  I am very, very jealous.  My ultimate favourite flying machine that was.  I saw it in a museum but never in the air and the restored one never came near here when it flew recently.  When I was young, in the pre-internet days, my mum spent forever trying to find a shop that sold an airfix model of a Vulcan.  We eventually got one on a holiday in the South Coast in Southampton!

I sure did Luke!!! ... at Leuchars too.   It was wild how on a typical Scottish cloudy day, it came into view and started to climb, only to hear a mild drone, then you heard silence, until it banked and the wind direction was in it's favour, followed by that ominous RIPPING sound in the sky, AWESOME!!!!!!!!!

The final time I saw the beast, I stood under it's vast wingspan .... along with a couple of bird's nests.

EDIT:  I may have a photo some place (converted from old 35mm slide) ... will get back to you on that.

Best Regards,
Cal :)

I'm sad it's the end of the Tornado but I still bereft from the standing down of the English Electric Lightning, :'(
yeah I'm that old.

John .... that was my 1st EVER Airfix model, seriously, no kidding!!!!

.. then North American Sabre, Hurricane, Spitfire, Lancaster Bomber, Mosquito, Messerschmitt Bf 109, Buccaneer,  Phantom ... and that's just the ones I remember, all dangling in various flight angles from my bedroom ceiling.

Alas, they eventually came down, once I grew the habit of throwing darts around the room!   :o

That's living alright!!!  :DD

That's going back John but another classic plane! Today's planes seem so computerised and seem to lack a little something.

It's true of warplanes and race cars, years ago they were designed by people a certain way because it looked right. Now they are designed by  computer to maximize their function, but they no longer look right.
