  • Russell went out this afternoon on C3 tyres and was instantly faster than Kubica with a 1.21.3
Not sure if this is important??!!
Mercedes are now showing real speed for the first time with 1.17.9 laps.
Top 9 are covered by 1 second and includes the 'big three' plus Toro Rosso, Renault, Alfa Romeo and Haas.
    All very interesting

  • My favourite comment so far from social media

"Good see Lance Stroll achieving his potential and taking Racing Point to the back of the grid"

Racing Point said that the chassis is basically last year's car with necessary changes to the aero kit. Being in administration last year precluded them from doing the design work for an all new car. Still, if there is a huge difference between Perez and Stroll, that will be telling.

Indeed it was Luke, that's one harder than the C3 medium that Russell used.
Likewise Stroll set his best on C2, but was still faster than Checo's best set on C3.

I thought so John, and by Pirelli's reckoning that would account for 0.7s alone.  Williams today are just making sure their car actually works.  I wonder if Stroll is out for some headlines in testing?  I mean, him personally, not the team!

I can see why you'd think that, but I think it's just different time of day on track. Mind you some cars seem better on some tyres than others, for instance the commentators on Sky were talking about the best time set on hard tyres was Lando's McLaren, this is not repeated on the softer compounds.

To show how it's hard to draw anything substantive from the best times; Lewis had an aborted lap that was purple in the first 2 sectors, only to come across Kubica messing about in slow gear in the latter part of the lap - there was almost a collision - it was enough to take headline off Lewis' lap though.

  • I only watched the highlights, but I saw an exact opposite of the incident you described...Kubica rounded a corner to find Lewis checking his email or something and had to go off-track to avoid.

Perhaps if both happened, the version you describe was payback.

  • I'm still playing catch up with a LOT of pre-season testing hours to watch (only on Day 3, Part 1 right now).  So, once I come up for air, I will be able to read recent comments and know where everyone is at, so to speak.

    Best Regards,
    Cal :)

That means it's basically the 2017 car with half a season's updates plus necessary changes to the car design, for these were pretty much the comments from last year.

  • So, with regards to 2019 pre season testing...

Consensus seems to be that Ferrari are out front although Hamilton was within 3 thousandths of a second of him today.

However, on the basis of what has happened so far, I feel that at least in Australia, things will look like this:

    Ferrari
    Mercedes
    Red Bull

    Renault/Alfa Romeo
    Haas/McLaren
    Toro Rosso
    Racing Point

    Williams

  • Might not be that bad, Kubica says he thinks the car is a great step forward from last year and has good potential.

  • I think the car is predictable unlike the FW41, but that is not saying much.  By all accounts (and I do mean 'all') the car is just slow at the moment, lacking downforce and outright grip.  So the drivers can predict what will happen and the car is stable, but they cannot push and were having to lift off at places where other cars were going flat out.

My hope is that this is because the car tested in Barcelona is a very, very early and basic version of the car and within a few races, the full spec car will be unleashed.
