  • So, we have our on site reporter in the form of Robem, which is good.  I am expecting first hand information about the goings on!  So, F1 2019 is now officially 'go go go'.  FP1 and FP2 have taken place.  Here are the timings:

Apologies for the poor formatting, but I hope it is not too ugly to get the information from.  Mercedes have shown up and are back on top.  But are Ferrari sandbagging?  And what about Red Bull?  Apparently Honda have already had to reassure everyone that an issue with Gasly's unit is not major.  Ricciardo had seatbelt issues, so wasn't flying today.  Williams were obviously not just sandbagging, but loading the car with concrete.  They are supposedly avoiding the kerbs to avoid damaging the car.

Still a long way to go this weekend, but at least the action is back!

  • The season is finally here! It's good to see Kimi up toward the sharp end. I think he might surprise some people Sunday. I've still got my fingers crossed for Haas.

One note: I might not make the Chat Room for the race. I've been having problems with internet connection. My laptop did a major barf too last week but I've got it fired back up again. (ALWAYS  do your backups! It saved me!) Hope to have things back up by Bahrain.

  • On question of concrete laden Williams does anyone think they may be allowed to ride the kerbs in the actual race, or are things so tight for fly aways that new parts are rationed.
If so bet they're praying that the 107% rule might save them from actually running the race in OZ.  :D

  • I get the feeling John that both Williams cars will have to retire mid way through the race for 'technical' reasons.  Ie, to save the car and keep mileage low on the engines as it is just not worth working them too hard if the car is having to drive cautiously.

  • Always meant to ask folks ... do you do "Anti-Spoilers" on this forum, as I typically watch a race a few hours after the actual live event.  I make a habit of avoiding any news/sport related TV/Internet sources, prior to sitting down and watching any given Qualy/Race.

    Best Regards,
    Cal :)

We will discuss the races, but usually just under the headline 'Heroes and Zeroes', unless something truly spectacular, or absolutely dreadful happens.  Subject headlines are rarely 'So and So wins the Whatever Grand Prix!'

Personally, if I have to watch the race on a delay (which I will do this weekend) I stay away from GP sites until I've had a chance to watch.

  • Thanks for the heads up Jericoke!

I'll likely play it safe until I've watched the Qualy/Race.

I once helped a newcomer to the valley lift a new BBQ from his vehicle into the house.   The usual "how ya doing mate!" ... weather, what you been up to, bla bla bla .... then he said "Did you see the race today? ... great win for Lewis!!" .... I nearly dropped his BBQ.

    Best Regards,
    Cal :)

  • If you do watch an F1 race live, drop by the Chat Room. Many of us our usually there for the races. I think you'll enjoy the conversation.

I rarely watch a race live .... typically a few hours later (depending on time difference to local event, it could be later that night, or at later in the day 'my Sunday night').  So, unfortunately, the chat room option doesn't work for me.

  • Dad found out who got pole because the TV catch-up facility didn't set up properly, launching him into the last 15 minutes of the broadcast instead of the beginning :( (ironically, I'd already seen Twitter because I hadn't anticipated getting to see qualifying, so had I been able to set the catch-up, nobody would have cared).

  • If it wasn't for the mid pack battles, it would unfortunately have been a pretty boring race.  Put it this way, if you were watching the Sky F1 coverage, how much did you see Bottas, Max or Kimi ... very little compared with some Hamilton, Ferrari and LOTS of Toro Rosso, HAAS and Racing Point.

Personally, I am very happy to see Bottas win, as it sets the tone for Hamilton not punching his card for future team order calls, while Ferrari go the opposite direction with an uncompetitive car and an early hint of team orders, favouring Vettel when there are currently no points on the table - a shocker, if that's a sign of things to come.

Of course, a really poor outcome for Danny Ric, messy day in the pits for Haas, more headaches for Williams, although that kind of masks Kubica's limitations with such a poorly running car (unfortunately).

Gasly needs to improve, as Danny Ric would have sailed past a Toro Rosso last season.  I think that's all that leaves a lasting impression from Melbourne??

As for the broadcast itself, still hate these driver photos flashing up, Crofty made a few commentary blunders along the way (he needs thicker glasses to identify Kubica's front wing for a start).  I don't like this new podium approach, as suddenly Lewis & Max disappear and Mark Webber is left interviewing Bottas (feels empty).

Anyway, that's my initial thoughts on the opening race of the 2019 campaign!

    Best Regards,
    Cal :)
