Thoughts on Qualifying
« on: March 16, 2019, 12:49:54 PM »
After watching qualifying in the early hours of this morning I was a little shocked to see how far off the pace Ferrari were.  Although not surprised to see Hamilton putting it on pole, well at the last minute.

It was good to see Russell, Albon and Norris all out perform their team mates.

Looking forward to lights out tomorrow  :D

Good show from rookies, however the evolution of the track in Q1 shocked me as much as some teams which accounts for some of the offset.
RBR strategists really messed up Gasly's start position by thinking one run in Q1 was enough.  :o

And how many times did RBR make some similar "mistake" to Danny last season? Same story, different #2 driver.

I'm really happy with how Haas did. I hope it holds up in the race.

Surprised by Kubica's error, going into the wall and blaming a sudden burst of pace in the car.  Seemed odd.  Were Mercedes sandbagging all winter?  Norris had a great session.

I don't think so, Barcelona is not a typical track and Merc where obviously not going for hero runs. I rather think it was Ferrari flattering to deceive. Remember last year Ferrari had poor testing and seemed off the pace only to surprise in the early races.
Yeah the boy Lando did good,  :good: though with Sainz going out in Q1 because he caught up to punctured Kubica at wrong time, we can't really know how good that is.

I wonder if Ferrari are better in cooler temperatures, Barcelona was a lot cooler than Melbourne so perhaps that also helped them appear faster than Mercedes.

Lots to talk about from Qualy in Melbourne isn't there!!!

Globally, encouraging to see the times tumbling so quickly and positions jumping around early on in P1 to start of P2.   Looks like mid field battles could produce most of the "talking points" this weekend, as I fear Mercedes could easily finish where they started.

A little disappointed with Renault, but early days.   Encouraging for Leclerc, positive for Kimi, good show by most of the rookies (well, in qualy anyway).   Shock for Gasly, unlucky for Bottas, projected dismal day for Williams ... and pretty much business as usual for everyone else (given that some issues on track cost them qualy positions to some degree).

Sidenotes (based on Sky F1 broadcast).

1) Flashing up driver photos at the sheer mention or brief action on track, I found annoying. (I know, pety).
2) Sky's sound set up on Paul Di Resta's interviews was a disaster .. I heard the other drivers talk more than the 1...2...3's
3) Seb, your Mustache does not work, so find a good razor and DEAL WITH IT!! .. (mind you, not as bad as your 2018 bowl cut hairdo).
4) David Croft ... get your facts right ... and please leave your "Gasly" jokes in the Christmas Cracker!!!!
5) Nothing else to moan about, so bring on the RACE!!!!!

Best Regards,
Cal :)
