Renault re-setting expectations

  • Oh dear, not good reading for Dan Ric - Cyril now reckons it's a multi-year project. I guess DR expected slightly less. I hope he doesn't end up being remembered for his badly timed career choices - a bit like Alonso.

  • Ricciardo was right to skip out on RBR, he was never going to win a WDC with Max there.

He might not win one with Renault either, but going from 'definitely not' to 'might not' is an upgrade.

I still find it bothersome that teams take 'years' to develop a winning car when they're required to enter a brand new car every season.  (I joked in the 'heroes/zeroes' thread about forcing Mercedes to disperse their personnel in order to give the rest of the field a chance.  I'm starting to think that might be a good idea for real.)

  • Sounds about right, so a bittersweet situation for Danny Ric now unfortunately!!!

I guess his aim is to finish "best of the rest" ... as that's his only realistic target with Renault of the foreseeable future.

    Best Regards,
    Cal :)

  • The results Renault thinks they are getting in the shop are not born out on the track. They claimed to have solved their reliability problems and gained 50 BHP but they are still leading the field in DNF's and certainly not showing the kind of power Merc or Ferrari have. Danny has said his problems are due to having less down force than the R/B had, so their aero doesn't measure up either. He also said when he came to the team that it would take years before he could contend for wins. Guess he was right.

  • I wonder if there's anything to Vettle vetoing
    DR's move to Ferrari?

Why would Ferrari hire the second fastest driver from another team?

While I agree that Vettel probably doesn't want to compete directly with Ricciardo, I can't imagine Ferrari was seriously considering him.

  • No. Ferrari's plan has been clear for years, and if Leclerc hadn't been ready, I doubt Ferrari would have bothered swapping out Raikkonen at all.
