McLaren Keep Norris & Sainz for Next Season.
« on: July 10, 2019, 03:46:29 PM »
McLaren announced that they will keep their current diver lineup of Lando Norris & Carlos Sainz Jr. through the 2020 F1 season.

Team CEO Zak Brown said, “I’m delighted we’re able to announce our 2020 driver line-up ahead of the team’s home race at the British Grand Prix this weekend. Both Carlos and Lando are proving themselves as racers and are integral to our path to recovery. They have made a real contribution to the positive momentum and morale within the team, both at the track and back at the factory. The reception they’ve received from our fans has been outstanding and they are superb ambassadors for the McLaren brand, personifying our Fearlessly Forward mentality.”

The team also announced that they have access to Renault reserve driver Sergey Sirotkin "should Carlos or Lando be unable to complete a full race weekend in 2019."  Hedging their bet?

I believe they do... namely Sergey Sirotkin. (It was Fernando Alonso until a few weeks ago).

This is a good call from McLaren.

So is there really truth about Alonso sniffing around the paddock, or is his departure from McLaren more about their failed Indy 500 run?

I think the story of Nando's potential return to F1 with another team is conjured from these remarks from Zak Brown talking to the media at the Brit GP.
My take is Zak is suggesting he's available rather than in pursuit of a seat.

"Fernando remains an ambassador with McLaren," Brown told reporters. "We have a great relationship with him and speak
However, speaking at Silverstone, Zak Brown admitted that the Woking team would not attempt to block the Spaniard returning to the F1 grid with a rival team.

"Fernando remains an ambassador with McLaren," Brown told reporters. "We have a great relationship with him and speak with him about some racing programmes in the future that are not Formula 1 related.

"But we're happy for him if he wants to get back into Formula 1, because we don't have a seat available, to go race for another team," he added. "We'd very much support him in that if that's what he wants to do."
