Is the Red Bull Driver Programme failing?

  • Sky has a story about Gasly not worried about his seat at Red Bull, which includes the possibility of him being replaced by Kvyat

While Red Bull did a great job with Vettel, Verstappen and Ricciardo, clearly the pipeline isn't producing.  Of course, 'producing' a WDC calibre driver is easier said than done, I think that Marco's programme isn't working.  Are the quality drivers hesitant to join Red Bull after seeing how quickly they can be shoved aside?  Is the programme not as good at developing the skills, and was lucky to have naturals in Vettel, Ricciardo and Verstappen?  Or is it just a natural lull while they wait for the next 'golden boy(girl)' to show up?

  • Dan Ticktum's just fallen off the programme, so that's a factor. There is a Superlicence-ready Red Bull driver though (Patricio O'Ward) in Indycars, however, so if I was Pierre I would not be quite as sanguine as he is probably needing to look in order to maintain the balancing act that is his career. Not yet, admittedly, but once the Indycar season is over, Patricio would be available to try out in a Toro Rosso if Gasly isn't pleasing Marko and Tost.

The fact that Red Bull have had to "borrow" their drivers for a while (Verstappen was picked up by the programme 6 days before he was signed to their F1 seat, so Red Bull can't claim credit for developing him) says that the programme stopped working as an in-house development system years ago. It's going to take an internal restructure to change that.

  • Surely Tost and Horner are completely fed up with Markoís meddling.  He seems to get involved in everything from driver choice to race strategy.  Why doesnít Dieter just make him RBRSTR team principal and demote Horner and Tost down to team managers?

Iím sure both walk out of meetings gritting their teeth about how they canít stand him.

Because Helmut already is one tier above them in the heirarchy, and has been since before either of them was hired. As such, Christian and Franz have to listen to him if they wish to keep their own jobs. It's just that there's enough in Helmut's role that he wouldn't have time to consistently also do the day-to-day admin tasks team principals must do.
