Prost Says Hulkenberg was"Too Negative"
« on: September 13, 2019, 08:59:34 PM »
Alain Prost say that Nico Hulkenberg lost his ride at Renault because he was too negative.

"We don't want pessimistic drivers, which is why we opted for Ocon. He is very motivated after being out for a year. Nico is quite negative, but he's also right about certain things. But we have to look forward, and a driver's negativity doesn't work for us, especially in a difficult season."

I find his statement about lack of development for next season of concern. I wonder how many other team will be looking past next season for the new-spec 2021 cars.

Negativity is difficult, but in a season where much is wrong, it's inevitable that there will be some, if only in the form of neutral comments about the car's shortcomings and the need to fix them. This makes me more worried about Renault than Nico.

Especially since Renault are being rather negative in their refusal to even try developing for both 2020 and 2021, despite having the funds to do so.

I'm sure the decision to take a much younger driver became easier since Danny Ric has clearly shown his superiority to the Hulk. Honey badger has clearly been held back by reliability of car/engine/strategy meaning the narrow points gap between the two should inevitably be more.

Teams will put up with public criticism from lightning fast hot shoes & race winners, but No 2's have to be more sanguine about their car's shortcomings.

Seems a trend now for better funded & works teams to bring younger talent into their cars but back end teams are relying more on experience to keep them as far up points table as possible. Maybe this will reverse again if the budget cap noticeably closes up the field.

At least if he's going to be negative about the team he could do it with humor, like Fern did.
""[There are] few times I've had such an uncompetitive car, without any winter preparation, having to save fuel in a brutal way -- I think we had to lift [off the throttle] about a second per lap -- and even so we were in the points. It was a pretty big surprise what we were doing, but in the end we couldn't complete it. But it was probably one of the best races I've had
...see negative with a positive spin.
