Roger Penske buy Indy
« on: November 04, 2019, 03:21:01 PM »
This is undoubtedly the worst, most heartbreaking news I've heard in my 63 years as a race fan.

Roger Penske, best known for his attempt to destroy Indy car racing with his CART series, has purchased the legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the IndyCar Series.

The formal announcement will be live streamed at 11:00 Eastern Standard Time today. I won't have the heart to watch.

I know we've always disagreed on the CART split, but I'm with you here. I don't like Penske and I'm sorry to see the Hulman/George family out.

Seems with his racing teams that's a huge conflict of interests
Mark Twain once opined, "it's easier to con someone than to convince them they've been conned."

Just a thought Cossie, maybe there's a chance now that F1 may return to it's US spiritual home at the Motor Speedway.

Doubtful. Penske has said the only reason he went into F1 was because Mark Donohue wanted to.

Keeping a business in the family seems like a great way to run it into the ground.

It may not be great news for Penske to take over, but the story is that the people who have been running Indy for the last generation weren't doing a great job either.

(Personally, I don't see a problem with Penske.  He's run a successful non-racing business for decades.  He's been successfully involved in many levels of motorsport.  Without getting into the open wheel split, it was a matter of too many roosters in the henhouse, now we have one.)

He's already come up with the worst racing idea I've ever heard of. A driverless version of Indy Lights. Driverless racing give a whole new dimension to the word pointless.
