Vettel on Hamilton to Ferrari in 2021
« on: December 05, 2019, 03:16:09 PM »
https://www.skysports.com/f1/news/12433/11878667/sebastian-vettel-unruffled-by-lewis-hamilton-to-ferrari-rumours

A few thoughts.

1)  If Hamilton DOES go to Ferrari for 2021, then it's a safe bet they'll be a championship team
2)  If Ferrari is looking for a driver in 2021, LeClerc will be the 'big dog', does Ferrari want someone to challenge him?  Or are they going to look for someone to be Charles' rear gunner?
3)  Vettel points out that Lewis owns several Ferraris.  It makes sense not to hire him so he can keep purchasing road cars to fund the team!

If Leclerc is Ferrari's future why would
they bring in Ham?

Next season is locked up so the press (and Hamilton) have nothing else to speculate on but 2021.

From Hamilton's side preparing the ground in case Merc main board pulls the plug on the team is surely a good thing.
This speculation can also strengthen Lewis' negotiating hand for a new contract at Merc.  ;)

Ferrari have always looked to put top drivers in their cars. Leclerc is more an experiment that's succeeding, for now, rather than the Scuderia's usual direction.
The Reds have only really had championship or near championship success in the new century after taking on proven winning drivers.

The only reason I see Ham wanting to drive
for Ferrari is he wants to do what MS did and
lead Ferrari into new championships....ego maybe

I haven't researched this, but off the top of my head if he won a championship at Ferrari, he would be the first since Fangio to win championships for 3 different manufacturers.

I think it will depend on whether Ferrari thinks Leclerc is ready to independently lead a title charge when Vettel and Ferrari separate. If he is, Binotto will at some point say to Hamilton, "Thanks but no thanks".

If, on the other hand, they think Leclerc needs a bit more studying time after Vettel's "classes" finish, Binotto will be extremely keen to have Hamilton as a team leader, to show Leclerc the rest of the ropes and hopefully take some titles on the way.

Personally, I think the former is more likely than the latter. However, Ferrari's uncertainty gives it motive to seriously consider an offer from Hamilton - who may need a harbour in case Mercedes quits F1...
