NASCAR Shops are "Essential Businesses"
« on: April 24, 2020, 07:54:43 PM »
The state of North Carolina has declared NASCAR race shops to be "essential businesses" that are exempt from the Covid lockdown. The series is still planning to run the Coca Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Sunday, May 24th. It will be run in front of empty stands (just like most NASCAR races of the last few years.)

We all know that F1 is a constant hive of activity as hundreds of designers, engineers and fabricators are constantly trying to invent slightly better parts such that every race weekend in F1 basically has a brand new car.

I thought NASCAR cars were simply what they are.  What would an open shop be doing?  When you race every weekend, that's a full time job repairing and rebuilding the race car, but when you go 4 months between races... what is going on?

Cheatin'. A respected part of NASCAR competition. The crew chiefs and others have come up with some truly innovative ways to cheat. Oversize engines, restrictor plates that disappeared, extra fuel in the frame tubing, a hydraulic device that altered the shape of the rear window. Penske took the brakes off the Porsche 917-10, slapped an AMC part number on them, installed them on an AMC Matador and won at Riverside, Mark Donohue driving.

That reminds me of an oft told tale legendary NASCAR builder Smokey Yunick. At one race, scrutineers did a complete teardown of one of his cars. It included removing the fuel take. They told him that they found 11 violations. smokey looked at them and said, "Boys, make it an even dozen." He tossed the gas tank in the passenger seat area of the car, fired it up & drove it back to the garage. They never did find out where he'd hidden the extra gas.

Way to go, Smokey!   :good:
