It's often puzzled me that your cops ask for registration docs, over here the most you get is "is this your car?", if no they ask who owns it. Still don't require paperwork unless there's a marker on the car in their system.

We've always been told, by the authorities, not to keep registration docs in car as it makes it easier if stolen to sell on.

I've been pulled over twice in the USA.  Once I was borrowing my sister in law's minivan, and it had a burnt out headlight.  I was pulled over by a Michigan State Trooper, and I could not produce registration, the trooper was polite about it, and sent me on my way.

The other time I was in Buffalo for a hockey game.  The line up to get back to Canada literally went from the border to the parking lot at the arena.  We decided to drive to Niagara Falls to cross the border there, but our GPS got confused, and pulled over in a shitty part of Buffalo to get the GPS sorted out.  Police  were concerned we were sitting in an abandoned parking lot, and gave us a friendly escort to the nearest border crossing.

Only been stopped in the States once but it was a lasting memory. I was in a rental in Baltimore - I was going to dinner with a Floridian who I had met at a seminar. We were stopped because I didn't come to a complete stop at a stop line. It all went weird when my passenger announced to the cop that he was carrying a licenced concealed weapon.
I suddenly felt like I had been transported to a movie set! All good in the end, but for a naïve Brit. having a cop cover us with a gun while my passenger showed his weapon was completely different to anything I had witnessed in the UK!
