I've been in vehicles that have been stopped 3 times. Once for a non-functional headlight, once because someone had flagged the vehicle by mistake, the other for reasons I never managed to establish. (I do know that I've never been in a vehicle where the driver got fined by a police officer, only by an automated camera for speeding).

The first of these did involve checking the registration document, but that was because the driver said they'd just bought the car, and the check was because that's the one time a British police officer would expect registration documents to be carried in the car (when ownership is transferred, so are the registration documents).
