Sir Jackie on The Best F1 Driver Ever
« on: October 07, 2020, 02:45:10 PM »
Jackie Stewart weighs in on "the best F1 driver ever" debate.
I agree with his view that drivers like Schumi & Hamilton are from an era where success is far more dependent on the car than in the past. I also agree with his choice of Fangio as #1, followed by Jim Clark at #2.

If there is one person I would take for Gospel in Formula one, it's Sir Jackie.  No one understands the sport as completely as The Flying Scot, and I don't think anyone ever will.

If he says Fangio is #1 and Clark is #2, carve it in stone.

Back when it didn't take thew best car to win a
race. Just think if the cars now had the same safety
as the cars back then. We'd be minus many a driver.

As a gen x snowflake, I can't believe that in Jackie's era drivers were treated like disposable guidance systems, not a human being to protect.

I've seen some great advances in safety since the 90s, but any time unnecessary danger was found, the FIA moved to make things safer, even at the expense of spectacle.

Here's a bit of the 1970 British GP. Note that the stewards don't have to worry about track limits because if you exceed them you're in the grass, no grip. Also note that the cars move around quite a lot. Lots of wiggles and tail wagging. It's so different it's hard to compare the skills needed to be fast with today's drivers in what are among the grippiest cars ever.
