Heroes and Zeros...Imola
« on: November 02, 2020, 06:25:37 PM »
I would like to give a shout out to the aero and chassis guys at Mercedes. There is a
lot of talk about the power of the Merc engine, but they consistently beat the
others who use the same engine. Even with a damaged floor, Bottas held off
Max for quite a while and was able to maintain the gap to the pack.

Lewis made his medium tires last a very long time showing pure speed is not his
         only talent.

DannyR was able to maintain 3RD despite being on worn tires and his enthusiasm is
         a pleasure to watch.

The Alpha Tauri team seems to have found some speed in their car. Their results
         have definitely shown improvement.

Thumbs down to Ferrari. Seb was having a good day and they completely botched
         his stop.

I missed the first third of the race, let me tell you I was surprised to see Kimi running 6th when I tuned in!

F1 is a fantastically complicated sport, and I think Imola really showed that.  A variety of strategies and approaches were visible at the race, and there wasn't one clear 'good' or 'bad' strategy.  I think having the single practice session really mixed things up and gave a chance for drivers to drive.

I really felt for Russell.  It's easy to forget how unforgiving an F1 car is, even for people whose job is remember that.  Hopefully he builds off that mistake, realizes it's not the end of the world.

As a zero.. is it just me or are 'track  limits' a much bigger deal this year than previous seasons?  I understand the rules, and why it matters... are they more stringent now, or are drivers pushing the limit more?

Albon suggested if they want to bring back track limits, they should bring back gravel traps.  I think that the paved runoff areas are great for safety, and car retrieval,so why not a meter wide gravel strip?  Just enough that running it over is a disaster, but not so much that cars are dangerously skipping over stones, or stranded in no man's land?  Also so that there isn't a whole truck's worth of gravel when a car comes back on the track.

I know the drivers love to drive the track but it is narrow and overtaking really needs an effective DRS and on this occasion the zone was 100m too short!
Hamilton's driving and strategy calls showed that he possibly is the GOAT.
Ferrari really let Vettel down.
Stroll really let himself down!
Great drive from Ricciardo.
I almost cried when George lost the car behind the SC  :o
Perez must me the best driver ever sacked mid-season!

I missed the first part of the race, too.
