With a ready Russel set to go Lewis may not have
the bargaining power he thinks he has. Should have
took the 2 years
Mark Twain once opined, "it's easier to con someone than to convince them they've been conned."

If memory serves, Lewis no longer uses an agent, doing his negotiating himself?

I'm sure a decent agent could assemble a 2 year contract with 2 year extension options which would please both sides.

My personal take:  it's not that that Daimler doesn't want to commit to Lewis until 2025... I think they don't want to commit to F1 until 2025.

Lewis has done all of his own negotiations since he 'sacked' his Dad many years ago - he has done very well so far  ;)

Personally, I think he will hold out for a contract that will see him reach his desired retirement and that also gives him more free time. He has the the biggest 'trump card' in that he could just walk away. I think both parties want a deal so they will find a good compromise; 3 years or 2years with a performance related 2 year extension??

Rumour as I doubt LH or TW would reveal details so rather than speculate I'll wait for an announcement.
Once you have retired every day is a Saturday!

Since Ineo and Daimler are partners in the team, I would guess any leaks come from them.

In negotiations with worldwide media interest it's often felt necessary to apply pressure by leaking half truths to try to force the other party's hand.

Merc/Ineos/TW side has many avenues to leak out tidbits, or even big whoppers, Lewis has much less opportunity for such gamesmanship.

Of course TW/Merc will deny rumours and speculation, to admit to any will likely kill any negotiation stone dead.

Sir Lewis, as he is now known has asked for a position as Global Ambassador for Merc after he retires and Toto does not want to give that.
I understand they are okay on salary etc but this is the sticky point.
This is what I saw in F1 news recently.

Imagine a retired Sir Lewis standing next to a BMW saying something like...BMW did not race in F1 so I drove for another team, but now that I can choose any car I want for my daily travels, I choose BMW.

That would fit into the narrative that Toto wants to divest of Mercedes and become involved in a different team.  Surely he wants Lewis to follow him?

I can see the point but Toto has just increased his stake holding in Mercedes so I cannot see him divesting. As far as I understand, his involvement with Aston Martin is in the Car Manufacturing not really the F1 team, plus his investment is tiny. Of course he may have some long term plan of amalgamating the AMG team and the Aston Martin team in the future?? Then control over drivers would be very useful; but I suspect Lewis would be retiring by then.

I think you could be right Monty. Seems to me it's Merc who are starting to distance themselves from their F1 team, by dropping their holding to a third they can certainly be out voted on future direction.

This leads me to think there's a ready made exit strategy for Wolff & Ineos to equally buy out Daimler parent company's share if and when they tire of F1.
