An 11th team?
« on: February 09, 2021, 07:16:17 PM »
Preliminary discussions are under way to admit a new team, Monaco F1, to the WDC in 2022.

I wonder what the rules would be for developing an F1 car.  They certainly can't spend a year testing like Toyota did (for all the good it did them), can they?  Are there any top level aerodynamic firms that aren't already contracted to F1 teams that could create a unique chassis?

I'm wondering if this Monaco F1 Racing team could be lining themselves up as a Renault/Alpine B team, much like the way Haas teamed up with Ferrari to enter F1.

There's any number of chassis manufacturers in lower Formula in Europe/Japan who may fancy a step up to the big time. They may not be as ready to go as Dallara was with Haas, but with more and more parts on F1 cars available to be sourced from other teams maybe it'll work.

I see that it would cost $200 mill to join F1 which would distributed between the other teams to compensated for the loss of revenue.
What an incentive to join an organisation as rich as F1, I would have thought it should be the other way around and they all have a whip round to help a new team get going.

The article mentions that fee can be waived (which makes me wonder if it will ever actually be collected)

I don't know how you can expect anyone to enter the sport if it's going to cost you $200 up front, plus the costs of actually building a factory, plus designing and building race cars... all while you're not eligible for prize money for the first few years.

Even without the cost of a factory, you're looking at least $600 million spent before earning a whiff of prize money?

Sigh, I'm so old I remember when you could show up at Indy with a car you built in the garage on weekends, pay the not too exorbitant entry fee, and run.

This is how Bernie got involved with organising weekends as nobody knew who was going to turn up or what they were going to be paid if at all.

So, because it's the kind of girl I am, I had to look up what it takes to enter the 500.

In 2018 you could do it for about $1 million, but closer to $2 million if you want a 'quality programme'.

Have to get started in January though, so I've already missed my shot for 2021.

I know what you mean, Lonnie. My favorite "Indy hot rod" was Barney Navarro's car of the late 1960's. He managed to get close to 700 hp out of an amazingly stock 6 popper Rambler engine. He used the stock block, head, rockers and crank with a reground stock cam. It even had the old Rambler cartridge type oil filter (but he did chrome plate it). He fitted it with twin turbos & a fuel injection system of his own design. It's weak spot was the several year old used chassis he put it in.
