Carlos Reutemann Dies

Carlos Reutemann has died after a brief illness. He won 12 races and took 43 total podiums against competition that included Lauda, Andretti, Piquet, Alan Jones, and a number of others. He became a favorite at the 1978 US GP. My friend and I were walking around a bit amazed by the whole atmosphere of the race when he arrived driving a FIAT 128 similar to the one I owned at the time. He stopped near the garage and went for reverse to back in, causing a grating/grinding of the 128's gearbox. This was an issue I often dealt with and it did me a world of good to see a top F1 pilot do it as well. That car just hated to go into reverse. He won the race and I became a fan. RIP sir, well done.

R.I.P. Carlos, I always thought you were underrated as a driver in F1.

Hey Lonny include me too as a rear gear crunching driver of Fiat 128. Mind you it had a great turn of speed for the engine size.
My biggest memory of 128 is having the feel of front wheels kinda tucking under when you accelerated away from standstill fast.  :D

Took it to the dealer with a strange noise in the right rear. I said I think it's a wheel bearing. The service writer asked why and I replied if you go around a corner fast enough to lift the right rear wheel the noise stops.  8) He looked at me kind of funny. I was right though. Early models were famous for wheel bearing failure though I only had the one.  :DD

The number of 'great' F1 drivers who just never got their lucky break is painfully long.  There are 770 f1 drivers all time (including 50's era IndyCar drivers)  To put that in perspective, 570 people have been to space.

The fact that Reutemann does stand out amongst such a select group does say a tremendous amount about his skill.
