Spa Renovation
« on: January 06, 2022, 09:50:03 PM »
Aside from the modifications to Eau Rouge and Raidillon, Spa is making a number of other changes to the circuit to get approval from the FIM for the return of the 24 Hour motorcycle race. This includes the return of gravel traps in several corners as well as the enlargement of a number of runoff areas. While gravel traps will be welcomed by many F1 fans, I worry that Spa will be a significantly changed circuit, losing some of what makes it iconic. Past changes to the track have disappointed me.

I'm not sure gravel traps will work in 'modern' F1.  The moment a car gets beached, it's time for a safety car.  Sure, drivers are punished for running wide, but half the time cars running wide are the defending car, trying to avoid a crash.  If you can run your opponent into a gravel trap, so much the better.
