Certainly win counts and winning percentages are valid ways to count 'success' of a race car.  The count is a little unfair given how few races there were in the first 50 years of F1 compared with the modern sport.

Maybe total/average number of cars defeated would help?  There were certainly bigger fields in the past, but also some cars ran against several sister/customer cars as well.

The W06 was a dominant machine, but it only beat 8 cars

Maybe they should take a look at how many other manufacturers copied features from a successful car. That would brine notoriously fragile Lotus into the picture.

One thing it does show is that having one car totally dominate a season isn't just a modern phenomenon. It also shows that it is far more common in recent years.
