Max Verstappen vs World's Fastest Drone
« on: February 28, 2024, 03:09:39 PM »
Red Bull partnered with a Dutch drone company to create the world's fastest (camera) drone to race Max Verstappen at Silverstone.

A few thoughts:
  • This is an incredible view of F1.  It is almost like watching a video game
  • When Max is racing in the wet, you get a much much better idea of what the spray is like trailing behind the car.  (Martin Brundle always points out that we don't really appreciate from TV cameras, but the drone lets you see that the spray remains hundreds of feet behind the car)
  • Red Bull has found an interesting way to get around cost caps.  They used their own aerodynamicists and materials experts to help build the drone.  A great way to keep F1 people on full time pay even if they aren't working full time at F1.  Other teams should certainly look into giving their employees part time work on other projects.  (Or maybe they do?  McLaren, and Ferrari are busy in other series)

That is wild! The fact that the run was in the rain was a real plus. It really showed how loose the car got on some of the corners.

The FIA later deleted the drone's lap time for exceeding track limits.  ;)

Helps you appreciate how much on the edge Max really is.  He's not just in the fastest car, but he's getting the absolute most out of the fastest car.
