2024 Canadian Grand Prix Heroes and Zeroes
« on: June 10, 2024, 03:40:23 PM »
Had a busy weekend, didn't get to watch much coverage besides Q and the race itself, so don't really know much of the off track news.  Perez (one year?  Two years, One year and an option?) and Sainz (Williams?) have signed?  Jacques Villeneuve was being a jerk?

Anyway:

Heroes:
The weather.  We got a wet race without delays or an undriveable track (sure, some drivers might disagree).  It affected strategy, gave drivers a chance to demonstrate their skill.

Max:  Not the easiest win he's had in the last few years.  I think he enjoys working for his wins, and I prefer watching.  I don't know that things were in serious jeopardy for him, but still, well done.

Hamilton and Russell:  great drives from both drivers.  I'd say looks like the car has finally improved, but we've seen how a car can be 'improved' one weekend and then useless the next.  Hopefully Mercedes is on the up.  Maybe Russell was optimistic with his one pass attempt, and while the stewards figured it was a 'racing incident', I would agree if Russell did get the penalty.  Clean fight between Hamilton and Russell though.

Piastri and Norris:  ditto.  They both proved to be strong drivers who belong at the pointy end of Formula One.

Albon.  His pass was one for the ages.  Threading the needle on a wet track could have easily gone wrong. Such a shame to be randomly taken out.  He might be the most snakebit driver on the grid.

Mercedes AMG:  6 of 8 cars in the top 10, maybe 7 if Albon had finished

Alpine:  double points finish may not be a lot for a team that used to win championships, but better than Ferrari and Red Bull.

Zeroes:
Perez:  continues to struggle.  There's something there.  Is it the car?  Is it slip in skills?  Confidence? He may not be my favourite racer, but all the same I hope he gets it sorted out.

Ferrari:  on top of the world one weekend, double DNF the next.  Sainz brought on the DNF himself, but he didn't have a machine that he needed to contend either.  (Always hard to give someone a zero because driving on a wet track is tough)

I don't have anything to add to that. It was a fun race to watch. My feeling earlier this year that this season would be a complete Max roadshow is proving to be wrong. Which I am happy about. Whilst I don't think he will be caught in 2024, there is hope for 2025. Before 2026 re-rolls the dice...

So my zero is the FIA who keep on making these big rule changes just as teams are converging on the optinal design for a given set of rules. It seems to take about 3 - 4 years for this to happen. Then they throw out the old rule book, we have one team hitting the sweet spot straight away and the rest playing catch up until they have caught up and the rules change again!
