The question is what colour for Williams F1 car this term
« on: February 15, 2025, 03:09:38 PM »
Williams ran a dark blue 24 looky likie livery at Silverstone (see below).

Now were they breaking Liberty's embargo ahead of Feb 18th all car reveal, or are they set for major colour change this year?

Have your say in the poll.

Maybe need to put a bit of red on it to make Carlos feel more at home. Multiple sources around the net report Williams very pleased with the kind of detailed feedback data they are getting from Saenz in early testing with '23 season car.

How about a little British Racing Green thrown in

Strangely enough Dare I only ever remember Williams using green on the original 1977 car when Saudia was the main sponsor. Even then the main colour was white.

Think Frank always felt like an outsider from the Gentlemen's club of racers who first created individual national colours way back before F1, or sponsorships, existed as such.

Test your knowledge of Williams historic colour schemes in a quiz here:-

Got one right   :-[

Didn't teams stop using British racing green because they
considered it unlucky?

I only got 4 from 10 myself Dare.   :-[

Think the unlucky colour green scenario probably carries over from Horse racing where a lot of Car racing terms & wording comes from - Paddock, Stewards & Marshals spring to mind.
There is no basis in fact for bad luck from colour Green in either sport from data evidence, in fact it's easier to support a contrary view.

The actual use of Green as Britain's identifier colour came from the Gordon Bennett Trophy days 1900 to 1905 when nations ran cars on standard roads in an annual Speed/TT race of approx 325 to 350 miles (500 to 550 km).

In 1903 Britain was host to Bennett's series, however speed restrictions in Britain of would you believe 12mph meant the racing took place in Ireland where local law could be changed to allow for road racing.

Organisers of British team chose to honour the Irish by painting their cars Shamrock Green instead of the Olive Green used the year before in France; Red, White & Blue were previously taken by USA, Germany & France respectively - British Racing green was born. Just don't ask what exact shade of colour that is as everyone has differing opinions.

National colors pretty much fell by the wayside after Colin Chapman cut his first big sponsorship deal. Even Jaguar's F1 cars weren't British Racing Green - They were sponsor Beck's Beer green.

Me too and the one I got right was a guess

3 right, Green was long considered unlucky at Indy. I know a few people were shocked when Lotus showed up in their traditional green and yellow.

Ah but there's the rub Cossie, what exactly is the real BRG colour?

The first cars in the Gordon Bennett era ran in Olive green in 1902, then in 1903 transitioned to Shamrock green at the Irish roads event.
Most would probably say BRG is a mix of the 2, although that's hard to pin down as well since Shamrock is a plant of the clover family it's colour will vary throughout seasons & from differing soil conditions or areas. Some images of Shamrock appear to be almost close to Beck's chosen green.  :D

I offer this small snippet from Wikipedia on the subject:-

"There is no exact hue for BRG – currently the term is used to denote a spectrum of deep, rich greens.
"British racing green" in motorsport terms meant only the colour green in general – its application to a specific shade has developed outside the sport."

Amen to that! When I started working on my 1970 MG Midget I found out that from 1964 through 1970 BMC offered 2 different British Racing Greens for MG's apparently simultaneously. One was BMC color code GN25 & the other GN29. The paint manufacturers all list different code numbers for each of the colors, too.

Seems we were all wrong and Williams have stayed pretty much in the same palette as last term, i.e. Dark Blue.  :swoon:

Begs the question who was fooling whom when Williams claimed the livery at Silverstone ahead of F1 75 group reveal was not a 'looky likie' of 25 livery.
