Author Topic: Is Aston trying to re-create Colin Chapman era from 60s & 70s again in F1?  (Read 2719 times)

Offline John S

Failure of Alonso's suspension at Monza was not apparently just because of kerbs at Ascari but rather a cumulative effect from gravel strike on first lap.

Aston admit "The team can confirm some gravel hit Fernando’s car in the first lap of the race in multiple areas, including his suspension, which compromised it,"  :o

Now hold on a darn minute Aston, both gravel on track at Monza and the kerbs- particularly at Ascari chicane - are a known hazard.  :stop:
What were you up to then with such flimsy suspension?

All I can think is you are now employing the old trick of Chapman's, i.e. building components just strong enough to last the race (or often not) to save weight.
Perhaps Aston you should remember how many of Colin's cars failed to finish in 60s & 70s, and lost wins, for a ha'porth of tar so to speak.  :D

Interesting question, do you make the car heavy and durable, and then strip away weight to make it fast?  OR make the car light and fast, and then add weight to make it more durable?

Honestly, I miss testing.  It's dull watching cars break on track with things that can't be discovered in computers or windtunnels.  It really takes the risk taking designs out of the sport.

With some races seeing zero dnf's I'd like to liven up
the races with more dnf's
Mark Twain once opined, "it's easier to con someone than to convince them they've been conned."

"When a rich man robs a poor man, it is called business. When a poor man fights back, it's called violence."

Give the teams a freer hand in design and innovation then!
They have a cost cap and as long as they keep within that let them go.
Once you have retired every day is a Saturday!
