Author Topic: Lando claims policing track limits is F1's silliest rule - well is it?  (Read 2280 times)

Offline John S

Me I don't think so, definetly NO!  :nono:

Surely driving on the track, not beyond it, is one of the fundamental skills required from any racer in any series.

How far off track does Lando think is acceptable, is it hard standing, grass, or even escape roads.  ::)
Bet he doesn't think gravel traps should be included in the list.  :D

They could always go back to the days when they just stuck a few sausage curbs out there and let the drivers take the consequences of running over them.

One thing is certain - no matter what the limit is some drivers will always want just a little bit more.

I think there's a middle ground.  I think cars need to be able to off track safely in order to take avoiding action when someone tries to pass when they shouldn't (and probably get penalized).

Penalizing someone for going off track when they're not passing/defending seems like it should be okay to me.

I also like the idea of there being a penalty for going off road.  Low grip surface, curbs that slow a car.  I don't like cars being beached in gravel, or curbs that will damage a car, just because that requires a safety car.

I don't really have a problem with the current rules though.  The limits are the limits; if you can't drive in the limits, then you're not doing your job.  If no one can, then the track designers and stewards aren't doing their job.

Track limits are necessary, otherwise there'd be no point having a circuit at all. Consistency of enforcement is vital to the validity of F1's remaining claim to being a sport. I understand Lando would be annoyed by being penalised for a small venture off the line, but the alternative was tried in the 2010s and early 2020s, and it was a mess.

The answer is quite simple really!
Make the white line and a band of track half the width of the car slippery to drive on, at the moment they only drive over the white because there's an advantage to do so if the grip is negated then so is the advantage.

Funny though ain't it that Lando managed to stay within track limits and still pass Charles after he was shown black & white flag for 3 track limits violations.  :D

Lando if you managed it after the warning I'm sure you could have managed it before!  :P

I really do want to see them within the white lines not with most of the car outside it!

He should be happy the tracks aren't lined with Armco like they used to be. He doesn't have much trouble with track limits at places like Monaco or Baku.
