Mandatory 2 stops per F1 GP race under consideration
« on: November 01, 2025, 02:11:48 PM »
Yeah a 2 stop minimum may jazz up things, may also mess up royally!

Part of the fun in races at the moment when field is set with hardly any chance of overtakes is we have to guess the unfolding strategies.
Remove much of the uncertainty with all 3 tyre sets (soft/medium/hard) to be used, and limit each tyre to 45% max, then races may assuredly become duller than ever as choices are limited and transparent.  :(

Just who thinks this stuff up?

Honestly, I don't mind the FIA 'crowd sourcing' the rules.

Float an idea, people say why it won't work, propose alternatives.  Way better than three guys in a room staring at their belly buttons and making us wonder what they were thinking after the fact.

I miss the old tire design that 'fell off a cliff' if you pushed them too far.  I know Pirelli got a lot of crap for that, so I don't blame them for not using that design, but there was an on track consequence for not pitting enough, yet still mystery when drivers would pit.

Remember that racing fans are no longer their target audience. It's all the fad fans who were watching some "reality" show last year (and will move on to another next year). They need a new gimmick every episode to keep their attention.

Maybe we need to go back to the 70's and 80's where F1 racing was about having the best gimmick on your car.

You never knew what would show up on any given weekend.  Wings on a car?  Crazy!  Engine in the BACK?  Who would do such a thing?  Carbon fibre instead of steel?  Do they have  a deathwish?  6 wheels?  Is that even technically a car?

Now we trust the experts when they say an all new floor under the car will shave 0.01 seconds off a lap when a driver is trailing an opponent by 8 meters in a medium speed corner.  And that's supposed to be the gimmick we're watching for?

I remember when we played the F1 version of Where's Waldo each race weekend trying to spot where all of the new winglets had sprouted from each team's cars.

I liked it when the cars didn't look the same

I liked it even better when drivers got no real instruction from the pits about which engine/brake/recovery settings to use, or instructions about time loss in particular corners or parts of track.

Let the pilots in the cars drive the machines making their own choices and then the best will win.

Or when someone with money could form a team just for the fun
of it and even win races.

You can feel when drivers are trying out lines hoping they catch on.

The teams are limited to a budget so let them, within reason, spend it how they want.
I miss those day when you didn't know what was going to turn up.

Exactly, why do you need cost saving measures when your costs are capped?

The one limit I'd like to see is that power units are designed in such a way that you can swap one for another, so that a works team doesn't gain an advantage of designing the power unit and chassis together, and customer teams must 'deal with it'.

How about this - Make the fuel tanks smaller & bring back refueling. Add more strategy & chances for mistakes plus making the current "world's fastest lorries" (Thank you, Ettore) smaller and lighter.

Sounds like a win-win to me.
