Last F1 privateer team
« on: December 21, 2025, 05:47:27 AM »

From a google search. Any thoughts.

The last "true" privateer team, buying chassis and running independently, was arguably the Rob Walker Racing Team, with their last win in 1968; however, the era ended with teams like Hesketh, Ensign, and eventually Williams (before they became constructors), with some sources pointing to Equipe Banco Occidental (running Williams cars) as the very last privateer entry in 1981, before rules banned them, while modern privateer-style teams like Haas F1 operate under different, semi-official rules now.

Wasn't Toro Rosso the last team to use a chassis designed by another team?

And before that, Sauber was using Ferrari designs with a wink.

(Unless we count when Racing Point got a little too much of a helping hand from Mercedes?)

Super Aguri used what was mostly year old Hondas (and sometimes outran Honda's factory team)

And they made the mistake of beating the factory team

Funny you should be mentioning Super Aguri, this small resume of the team just dropped today.

The last straw was when their sponsor, SS United Group Oil & Gas Company, didn't come through with the money. Also, like Dare said, Honda didn't really care to have their "B team" show up the first stringers.
