How Formula 1 Crash Safety Tests Work

Came across this article on F1 crash safety testing, they certainly put some extreme loads on F1 chassis & survival cells.

Oh, and who knew about Zylon shields to stop side impact penetration? - Not me anyway.

Of all the technological advances that motor racing brings to the world, safety may be top of the list.  Understanding what happens in a crash, how to measure it, how to stop it is all very difficult and I love that F1 leads the way on it.

Romain Grosjean's crash, to me, represents the pinnacle of F1 technology.  His crash activated so many safety features (as well as demonstrating some that weren't working).  So many aspects of that crash would have killed him, and yet he basically walked away.

Totally agree Jeri. I was certain Romaine was dead and then he just stood up. Props to the guy who helped him over the barrier.

I thought that there was no way he'd get out of that without major burns. Looking back his exit from the flames did look like something out of an action movie.

He does have some scarring on his hands.
