Your daily driver is likely spying on you.
« on: April 02, 2026, 11:39:47 AM »
I was intrigued when recently a friend of mine told me an aquaintance of his in the military had to shut off lots of functions on a hired car to stop 3rd party tracking.
Routinely military user cars are checked over to make sure no data collection is possible by auto makers or others, he said.

Personally I'd never heard of car makers collecting real time data, and more to the point giving access to 3rd or even 5th, 6th, 7th parties.
Just shows how big brother is circling in on us all!  :swoon:

It doesn't surprise me, ever since GM 'onstar' knew to call when there was an accident, people had to know the car was both recording and sending information.

If you follow trials of car accidents, you understand how much data cars are collecting.

There was a lady who ran over a family in a Costco parking lot, and she swore up and down that she had her foot planted on the break, but the car's computer showed her foot was planted on the gas.

And given we're (as a society) okay with phones and TVs collecting data, surely our car isn't where we'd draw the line.

Many car insurance companies have devices that plug into the car's OBD reader port to allow them to monitor the insuree's driving habits.

My insurance company offered me one to see if I was eligible for a safe
driver discount. I was afraid my rates might double so I passed

Fortunately, my car is from well before 2018. My phone is another matter. I had most of the tracking turned off, but started working for Door Dash and they insist you turn tracking on and leave it on. Why they need my location when I'm not signed in, who knows.

Me too Dare, guess it's the price we pay for being motor race nuts, too much left foot braking!!   :DD :DD

Because Door Dash's business model isn't selling delivering cold noodles, it's tracking people.  Where you go is worth far more to them than the food you deliver.  At least they think it is.

Honestly, all this data 'they' are collecting, I have no idea how they do anything meaningful with it.  "So our conclusion is... most people who live in a city live in a city, and most traffic in the city is on busy roads.  Oh, and this one chick has some batshit opinions on F1"

Yet another reason why I'm so fond of Elmer, my 2002 Taurus. I like it even better every time someone tells me how a malfunction in some minor gizmo instantly transformed their brand new car from a vehicle into a lawn ornament.
