R&D at Ford dreamed up a car to run on Uranium fuel to generate steam that would drive a turbine and power the vehicle for thousands of kilometers without refueling.

On paper, the Nucleon promised incredible range and quiet operation, but serious challenges involving safety, heat management, weight, and fuel supply made the concept impossible to bring to production, or even to make a working prototype.

I'm sure the 'project' was done for the headlines, not for any serious expectation that it would actually work.

But I suppose plenty of companies go down weird R&D paths on the off chance it might actually work.  Apple had two phones in development, and the touchscreen one was seen as the 'pie in the sky', that any real phone had to have buttons.

I just read a story here where a Ford worker was fired for supposedly
not paying for a snack in a machine. He proved he paid for  it and was
offered his job back but he had already found a new job. The story said
he made $200,000 a year working on the assembly line. And people wonder
why cars cost so much

I often wish my phone had buttons. I'm not a touchscreen fan. I read an article a long time back that said NASA was working on a nuclear rocket booster, but it too had problems and never made it to the launch pad.
