Two-step regulation change across 27 and 28 to reduce role of electrical power in F1 engines is FIA compromise proposal, see table below.

Four of the six engine manufacturers need to agree on any changes to the 2026 power unit rules hence this copromise, which it appears has happened & will go forward for formal approval at next WMSC meeting on 23rd June.

OEMs like Audi had reservations about the need for hardware changes to these expensive and complex engines having already invested a fortune to get to this season. They obviosly can live with compromise.

Ferrari were on a different tack hoping for some relief from ADUO against Mercedes, however since Merc is not the best of the best - that's RBPT - then any advance can be neutered by Merc's own efforts to gain power. This compromise may give Maranello another chance to re-visit fundamentals on the ICE above beyond ADUO balance of power leg ups.

Could this also aid Red Bull, might the best ICE get a chance to show a clean pair of heels to others with reduction of battery power - if indeed RBPT has the top ICE.  :DntKnw:

I'm still confused why reducing the over all power of the car is 'better'

If the electrical power cutting out at inconvenient times is a problem,can they not just increase the electrical power?  I feel like it's already artificially limited, that the existing systems can provide more power if the FIA just let them.  So it's not a manufacturing expense compared with upgrades to the engine.

Jeri, the missing part in your hypothesis is that current energy recovery system can't provide enough top up for battery on laps at most circuits, therefore increasing battery power output may not help.

Perhaps putting more power through the ICE will address some of these deficiences.  :DntKnw:

So it's cheaper/easier to upgrade the engine than the electronics?

I still feel like the electrical portion is being limited, that the existing system has more capacity without changing much.

Don't get me wrong: an F1 car has to be safe and reliable before anything else.  If this is the only way to do so, sure, I get it.

I just don't understand why people are like 'yay less power'.

Think GT3 RS around the ring vs a 1000hp Ferrari sf90. The 3 RS will be miles faster (not quicker) around the ring because of its huge aero advantage even though it has half the ponies. Just because it has less power doesn't necessarily mean it'll be slower around a racetrack. Straight line yes, but when it comes to braking and turning different story. I would think.
