Renault's Giancarlo Fisichella believes he will struggle to emulate last year's victory at the Malaysian Grand Prix but still hopes to finish on the podium.
"I've got great memories from last year," said the Italian, second on the timesheets during Friday's afternoon practice. "It was a great weekend, I started on pole and won the race.
"The car was fantastic. Even though it was tough mentally and physically, because the car was really good, I was very comfortable.
"This year, the car is not as good but anything could happen. Our target is to score maximum points and get on the podium."
Fisichella, the leading driver at the title-winning team after the departure of double world champion Fernando Alonso to McLaren, said high temperatures made it difficult.
"It is important to have a good strategy and not to make any mistakes, which is quite easy because the track temperatures affect the level of grip," he said.
Fisichella and Finnish team mate Heikki Kovalainen were second and third respectively in second practice, although helped by low fuel loads and new tyres.
The Roman said there remained much work to do before Renault can match Ferrari or McLaren.
"It is important to do our best for the thousands of people working for us," he said. "The team is motivated and myself and Heikki want to get the best results.
"It's not easy but we are motivated to improve the car, improve the balance and fight for victory."
